Solved in July 2026. OpenAI announced a proof, produced by GPT-5.6 Sol Ultra, that every bridgeless graph has a cycle double cover; Sang-il Oum's arXiv exposition (arXiv:2607.16356) presents it in a self-contained form suitable for advanced undergraduates, assuming only Fleischner's splitting lemma and the Nash-Williams--Tutte tree-packing theorem. The proof reduces to cubic 3-edge-connected graphs, takes a nowhere-zero $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$-flow $\phi$ (Jaeger, Kilpatrick), and shows via an $\mathbb{F}_2$ consistency criterion (solvability of $At=b$, checked through $C(A)=\ker(A^{T})^{\perp}$) that vertex labels $t_v$ exist for which the two-element edge label $P_e = t_u+\phi(f_u)+\langle\phi(e)\rangle$ is well defined; the supports of the seven nonzero labels are Eulerian and cover every edge exactly twice. The argument yields an 8-cycle double cover. The 5-cycle double cover conjecture, the orientable/directed cycle double cover conjecture, the general strong embedding conjecture and the Berge-Fulkerson conjecture all remain open.

Announced (11 July 2026) a complete proof that every bridgeless graph has a cycle double cover, settling the conjecture of Seymour and Szekeres. The argument reduces to cubic 3-edge-connected graphs, starts from a nowhere-zero $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$-flow, and uses an $\mathbb{F}_2$ linear-algebra consistency criterion to choose a two-element label set for every edge; the supports of the labels form the cover.

Self-contained ~10-page exposition of the OpenAI proof, assuming only Fleischner's splitting lemma and the Nash-Williams--Tutte tree-packing theorem. Symmetrises the choice of the two edge labels and replaces the dual-space argument by the identity $C(A)=\ker(A^{T})^{\perp}$. Also records the consequences: an 8-cycle double cover for every bridgeless graph, the strong (circular) embedding conjecture for cubic graphs, Bondy's small cycle double cover conjecture for simple 2-connected cubic graphs $\ne K_4$ (via Lai--Yu--Zhang), and the Jamshy--Tarsi matroid form.

Reviewer notes. Status changed partial -> solved on 2026-09-06 on the strength of arXiv:2607.16356v3 (Oum, 1 Aug 2026), an exposition of the proof announced by OpenAI on 11 July 2026. Caveat: neither the announcement nor the exposition has been peer-reviewed or journal-published yet, and the earlier arXiv claims (1202.0569, 1510.02075, 1811.08719) are a reminder that CDC attracts flawed proofs. What is different here is that the write-up is short, elementary and checkable by hand -- it cites only Fleischner's splitting lemma and the Nash-Williams--Tutte tree-packing theorem -- and that the exposition is by a recognised expert (Sang-il Oum, IBS Discrete Mathematics Group), who states it as Theorem 1 and derives further consequences from it. Downstream consequences recorded in the exposition: (i) Theorem 18, every bridgeless graph has an 8-cycle double cover, which fills the (8,2) box of the (m,n)-cycle-cover chart; (ii) the strong/circular embedding conjecture now holds for cubic graphs (Jaeger's survey reduction), though it stays open in general; (iii) Corollary 17, Bondy's small cycle double cover conjecture for simple 2-connected cubic graphs other than $K_4$ becomes unconditional via Lai-Yu-Zhang; (iv) Theorem 27, the Jamshy-Tarsi equivalence upgrades to a theorem: every binary matroid with no coloop and no $F_7^{*}$-minor has a cycle double cover, hence so does every coloop-free regular matroid. Explicitly NOT settled: Bondy's $n-1$ small CDC conjecture for simple 2-edge-connected graphs, the 5-cycle double cover conjecture (Celmins, Preissmann), the orientable 5-CDC conjecture (Archdeacon, Jaeger) which would imply the 5-flow conjecture, the oriented cycle double cover conjecture stated further down this OPG page, and Berge-Fulkerson. The timeline start year is pinned to 1973 (Szekeres, Polyhedral decompositions of cubic graphs, for bridgeless cubic graphs; Seymour stated the general bridgeless form in 1979) via the review's `claim_year` field: the bibliography heuristic would otherwise date the bar from Tutte 1954, a cited antecedent rather than the conjecture.

Discussion

This beautiful conjecture was made independently by Szekeres and Seymour in the 70's and is now widely considered to be among the most important open problems in graph theory. Note the similarity between this conjecture and the Berge-Fulkerson conjecture on perfect matchings. Attempts to prove this conjecture have lead to a variety of conjectured strengthenings, which appear on other pages. See: The circular embedding conjecture , The five cycle double cover conjecture , The faithful cover conjecture , and Decomposing Eulerian graphs . If a graph $ G $ has a nowhere-zero 4-flow then it follows from a result of Tutte that $ G $ satisfies the above conjecture. Thus, by Jaeger's 4-flow theorem [J], the above conjecture is true for every 4-edge-connected graph. A cubic graph has a nowhere-zero 4-flow if and only if it is 3- edge-colorable , so the above conjecture is also true for 3-edge-colorable cubic graphs. In general, it follows from vertex splitting arguments that problem may be reduced to cubic graphs which are not 3-edge-colorable. For a general graph $ G $ with no cut-edge, Bermond, Jackson and Jaeger [BJJ] used Jaeger's 8-flow theorem [J] to prove that $ G $ has a list of circuits so that every edge is contained in exactly four. Fan [F] used Seymour's 6-flow theorem [S81] to prove that G has a list of circuits so that every edge is contained in exactly six. Let $ G $ be a directed graph and let $ C $ be a circuit (not necessarily a directed circuit) of $ G $ . If we choose a direction to travel around $ C $ , then every edge of $ C $ is either traversed forward or backward. The following strengthening of the cycle double cover conjecture takes directions into account. Conjecture (The oriented cycle double cover conjecture) If $ G $ is an orientation of a bridgeless graph, then there is a list $ L $ of circuits of $ G $ with directions so that every edge of $ G $ is traversed forward by exactly one circuit in $ L $ and backward by exactly one circuit in $ L $ . Tutte also showed that every graph with a nowhere-zero 4-flow satisfies this conjecture. Thus, as above this conjecture is true for 4-edge-connected graphs and for 3-edge-colorable cubic graphs. It was mentioned above that for a general graph $ G $ with no bridge, there is a list of circuits containing every edge exactly four times. By taking two copies of each circuit in this list and giving them opposite directions, we have a list of circuits so that every edge is traversed forward and backward exactly four times. Luis Goddyn and I (M. DeVos) have observed that the same ideas used in Fan's article [Fa] can be used to construct a list of circuits with directions so that every edge is traversed forward and backward exactly three times. The following natural question seems to be open. Conjecture (The oriented cycle four cover conjecture) If $ G $ is an orientation of a bridgeless graph, then there is a list $ L $ of circuits of $ G $ with directions so that every edge of $ G $ is traversed forward by exactly two circuits in $ L $ and backward by exactly two circuits in $ L $ . Since every graph with a nowhere-zero 4-flow has a list of circuits with directions traversing every edge forward and backward exactly once, the above conjecture would follow from The three 4-flows conjecture.
